First snow

Actually, this is the second snow. The first one was a couple of nights ago, a very thin layer, which disappeared quickly again. Didn’t “count” ;-)

3rd of January: We had rain and storm all day, so I wasn’t quite expecting this sunset. Result: noticing too late to go outside to get a better view of it. (fallen for that too many times – see great sky, get bicycle out, race towards the river, and arrive too late, even though it’s only 3 minutes to get there)

This one was this morning, while it was very stormy, and the whole of my neighbourhood seemed to be covered under a huge thick dark cloud, while showing bits of blue sky further away. Until photos come with sound, you’ll just have to imagine the howling wind to get the full atmosphere ;-)

The photos below were taken yesterday afternoon, a little before sunset.
The last one of the four was very close to sunset, and was after I’d given up on getting a nice sunset over the river, came back down the stairs and back on the bicycle, and looked back. So naturally I stopped again :-)

The weather

The weather was all over the place Sunday. It started completely overcast, then the sun came out, then rain, and then the sun again. The only consistent factor all day was the wind. Very windy day!

Chocolate before milk

I was planning to take a photo of the mug with the hot chocolate milk in it, with whipped cream on top and possibly even with sprinkles, but as I was putting the powder into the mug, I noticed this little white and brown composition instead.

Sunset and golden hour

This time of year I often miss the golden hour because it happens during work hours. It also only lasts about 10 minutes here; a big (otherwise very useful, don’t get me wrong) dyke between the river and my house is blocking the light…

And is it me, or is the light really more golden in autumn than it is in summer? For the ten minutes I get to see it coming through my windows, it certainly seems to be.

Contrary to what the facts may indicate, I haven’t given up on photography just yet ;-)

I also didn’t stop taking photos, I just couldn’t be bothered to pick out the best ones and edit and post them.

And I still can’t.

But… I’ve decided to make it easier to get photos posted here, as I really do want to keep photographing and try to get better at it.

I found that the one thing I’ve always got with me, even when running a 5 minute errand around the corner, is my phone. It’s not a dSLR, but it takes photos. It’s also a lot lighter and smaller than my D5000, and much less hassle to get out for a quick snap of someting.

Some people might call it lazy (and maybe it is!), but after taking a photo with it, I can apply a one-click filter that comes close to what I sometimes add with 20 minutes of curves fiddling in PhotoShop.

So, the plan is to get back to regular posting from now on, and I’m starting with some of the photos I took today on my bike ride in the hot summer sun. Yes it’s October, but the weather clearly forgot to check the calendar the last couple of days! :-)

By the way, if you’re on Instagram, you can see all the photos there (I’m locusmeus) – I won’t post each and every one here on the blog.

Week 52: Heswall

And… here is the last photo of this series!

I first saw photos of the boats near Heswall on Pete Carr’s blog, and planned to visit the place on my next visit to Wirral to try and photograph them myself. But I just never got into that neighbourhood really, until a couple of weeks ago.

It wasn’t quite sunset yet (at 10.30 in the morning), and there wasn’t actually any sun at all really. Just a bunch of clouds waiting to rain. And they did, starting with a drop or two right as we started taking pictures, and full on rain within about 20 minutes.

So, now I know, to get really interesting skies, I just need to wait till it almost rains! ;-)

So, after this 52, what’s next? I don’t know yet. I do have some ideas, but haven’t made up my mind yet. As soon as I do, there will be a blog post about it :-)
